Licensing
The licensing of music is required by the United States Department of Copyrights. The
Department of Copyrights seeks to enable owners of original intellectual property (e.g.,
songs, poetry, stories, etc.) to have control over their property in the same way a person
has control over his/her physical property (e.g., paintings, land, house, automobile,
etc.). To do so, copyright law requires a "Mechanical License" for any
reproduced copy of a song. Reproductions can take many forms, including but not limited
to: musical recordings (e.g., CD, cassette, etc.), print (e.g., songbooks, sheet music,
etc.), video or movie soundtracks, and multi-media presentations and projects (e.g.,
CDROM).
If you or your organization would like to include one of Joel's songs in
your next project, you will need a Mechanical License. The cost of this license is based
on two factors: type of medium (CD, cassette, print, etc.) and number of units
manufactured. To request a Mechanical License, simply complete and submit the form below.
