The world we live in offers so many promises that are never fullfilled. Our eyes and minds love to
dream of big things, but many times for selfish reasons. In this ficticious song inspired by many aspiring musicians
I've met through the years, Randy's dream was to be rock star. As he pursued it, he realized how vain and empty his
life still was. Until we realize the dreams that God has for us, we'll never be fulfilled and happy. "...whoever trusts
in the Lord, happy is he." Proverbs 16:20b
My friend Rob Bryceson and I wrote this song for the Pure Adventure project in 1989 at my studio near
Spokane. I remember we would laugh so hard at some of the lyrical twists and turns we came up with as we wrote it.
It's amazing what kind of things come out of two tweaked minds working together! It was recorded in a couple of days on
less than perfect gear with even less expertise (yours truly) at the console so it's always been a bit "rough", but it
rocks just the same!

Big Time Rocker
Randy's dream was to reach the top
Bought his first guitar in a dirty pawn shop
While the jocks played games and the soc.'s mixed
He grew his locks and he learned his licks
'Til they were alright
Randy got a break in a long-haired band
In a friend's garage the boys would jam
Tom became a dad, Dave a marine
Randy made a name in the local bar scene
chorus He had stars in his eyes but there's a hole in his heart
He's in for a ride that will shake him apart
Says he can't lose, no he'll never fail
'Cause he's got the whole world by the tail
Big Time Rocker
Didn't take long word got around
By speed and flash they knew his sound
Randy cut a record for the radio
Signed his life away for a big road show
"Don't worry, it's alright, kid"
In the bright spotlights sweat drenched his face
They screamed his name and he rocked the place
But Randy saw trouble in the backstage lights
In the phony smiles of the parasites
chorus
In Randy's soul a hunger gnawed
This rocker's dream was a hollow fraud
The video lies on the MTV
Twist the heart and soul of reality
