Keep The Faith

Notes from Joel:

In the camp dorm room setting of our weekend quarters at Hume Lake Christian Camps in the winter of 1984, I sat with Dave Fenderson and Matt Kilburn struggling to write a song to crank up the excitement level of High School students which were bored with the camp tunes of past days. I knew we needed an anthem to rally the masses; to send them off excited about being called Christian. The song that was born that afternoon and performed that night for the first time was 'Keep The Faith'. It went through some changes over the course of the years, but they were minor. I remember the first time we did it and 500 students went wild! From the stage, I could see the executive staff of Hume Lake in the back of the auditorium wearing petrified expressions. Looking back now, that was a critical day for Hume Lake. They could have shut down the Rock style of the day that we introduced (which I think could have changed the effective future of Hume Lake) or they could embrace the relevent sounds of the day as another tool to reach students for Jesus. They chose the latter, much to the credit of men like Bob Hilts, Bob Philips, and a board of directors with hesitant but clear vision. 'Keep the Faith' was a recurrent annual anthem that shook the walls of Hume Lake for many years to come.

Keep The Faith

When the light in your heart starts going dim
You're trying to survive
Keep your eyes set on him
And keep your faith alive

chorus
Keep the faith, keep it burning 'til the end
Keep the faith, until the Lord comes back again
Keep the faith, keep it burning 'til the end
Keep the faith, until Jesus comes again

Your wallet's thin, you're almost broke
Down to your last five
God says he'll provide for you
Just keep your faith alive

chorus

In the fifteenth round your strength is gone
About to take a dive
Remember where your strength comes from
And keep your faith alive

chorus
